By Lukas Graiff, PhD candidate, University of Innsbruck
When I learned that I had received the Horizon scholarship program, it was immediately clear to me that this would be more than just an academic experience. These six weeks at Western University in London, Ontario, were set to become one of the most formative periods of my research life. With this post, I want to share my experiences and the incredible opportunities that came my way.
First Impressions and the International Research Training School (IRTS)
The first days at Western University were a mix of excitement and nervousness. Initially, campus life in another country felt unfamiliar, but this quickly changed due to the warm reception and the international atmosphere I encountered there. Three of these six weeks were dedicated to the International Research Training School (IRTS). Here, researchers from all over the world came together to discuss and learn about the latest developments in our fields.
IRTS provided a platform for me to present my current research project to a broad and international audience. The feedback I received was incredibly valuable. Experts and colleagues not only offered constructive feedback but also perspectives I had not previously considered. These discussions opened new paths for my work and reinforced my desire to advance my research.

Networking and the NASSM Conference in Montreal
Another highlight of my stay was attending the NASSM Conference (North American Society for Sport Management) in Montreal. This opportunity was made possible through the connections established by IRTS and proved to be an excellent platform for networking. Interacting with other researchers working on similar topics was inspiring and opened up possibilities for future collaborations.
The conference not only helped me to expand my professional network but also provided deeper insights into current research trends and challenges in my field. It was fascinating to see how diverse the approaches and methods can be, even within the same area of research.

New Project Ideas and Their Implementation
One of the most exciting aspects of my stay was the development of new project ideas. In collaboration with other talented researchers, several innovative concepts emerged during workshops and informal meetings, which are now (hopefully) being implemented. These projects are promising not only in terms of their academic contributions but also regarding their practical application possibilities.
Having the opportunity to accompany these ideas from conception to the planning stage was an extraordinarily enriching experience. It taught me how fruitful interdisciplinary and international collaboration can be and how it extends the boundaries of what is possible within individual research institutions.

More Than Just Academia
Beyond all the scientific achievements and professional advancements, it was the people who made my stay special. The friendships I was able to form during my time at Western University have broadened both my horizon and my heart. These connections went beyond typical networking; they became real, supportive relationships that I will continue to nurture in the future. Special thanks also go to Professor Laura Misener and her team, who not only provided me with round-the-clock academic support, but also really helped me to settle in and feel at home in London.
Conclusion
Looking back, I can say that the six weeks at Western University were a time of intense learning, personal development, and academic exchange that I would not want to miss. I am grateful for every single experience and encounter I had in this context. This program not only sharpened my research profile but also enriched my life.
